In 2026, the biggest AI companies all launched the same kind of product: the proactive AI agent. Anthropic has Claude Duet, Meta has Muse and OpenAI has Dots. Here’s what that kind of agent is, how it works, and how the main ones compare.

What is a proactive AI agent?

A proactive AI agent is AI that works for you before you ask. Instead of waiting for a question, it watches your apps, notices what needs you, tells you, and offers to handle it.

It helps to compare three kinds of AI:

Type What it does Example
Chatbot Answers when you type The regular Claude or ChatGPT chat
AI agent Does tasks you give it, using apps and the web Claude Cowork, Claude Code
Proactive agent Reaches out first, then does the work Claude Duet, Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots

How proactive AI agents work

Most proactive agents follow the same four steps:

  1. Connect. You link the agent to your apps, like email, calendar or accounting. These links are often called connectors.
  2. Watch. The agent checks those apps on a schedule. Claude Duet, for example, checks every few hours.
  3. Tell you. It sends a summary of what matters, like Duet’s morning brief, and flags urgent items.
  4. Act, with approval. It does the work in the background on its own cloud computer. Before anything sensitive, like paying or sending, it asks you.

The “own cloud computer” part matters. Duet, Muse and Dots each run on a virtual computer with a browser, so your own device doesn’t need to stay on.

Are AI agents safe?

They can be, if they’re built with the right guards, and you stay involved. An agent that can read your email and pay bills is powerful, so the safeguards matter more than with a chatbot.

Look for these before you connect an agent to your accounts:

  • Approval before sensitive actions, like sending, paying, signing or deleting.
  • No access to your passwords. Good agents never see them directly.
  • Hard limits, like no stock trading or money transfers, even with approval.
  • Defense against prompt injection, which means hidden instructions inside emails or web pages.
  • Easy disconnect, so you can cut off any app at any time.

Claude Duet has all five. See exactly how in is Claude Duet safe?

No agent is perfect

Even the best agents can misread a message or get urgency wrong. Read drafts and approval requests before you say yes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a personal AI agent?

A personal AI agent is an agent that works for one person, across their own apps and accounts. It might manage your inbox, calendar, bills or shopping. Claude Duet, Meta Muse and OpenAI Dots are all personal agents, but each targets a different kind of user.

What's the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?

A chatbot answers questions when you type. An AI agent takes action: it can use apps, browse the web, create files and finish multi-step tasks. A proactive agent goes one step further and starts work without being asked.

Which AI agent is best for small business?

Right now, Claude Duet is the most focused on small business. Anthropic built it for professionals and small business owners, with connectors for QuickBooks, Stripe, Gusto and Shopify. It's US-only and needs a Claude Pro or Max plan during the preview.
